Rapid Assessment of Earthquake Source Characteristics

چکیده
Recent studies emphasize the rapid assessment of earthquake source properties, such as moment magnitude, to help alleviate the impact of earthquakes. Depending on local crustal structure, earthquakes occurring at different depths can differ greatly in high-frequency motions, which emphasizes the importance in constraining focal depth for the predictions of strong motions. For large earthquakes, assessing rupture directivity is also essential in estimating ground-motion effects throughout the source region. In this article, we perform an in-depth study on a group of recent earthquakes near the intersection of the San Jacinto and San Andreas fault systems in southern California. We develop a systematic method to accurately estimate moment magnitude and focal mechanism within 3–6 s after the first P arrival. Focal depth can also be constrained within ∼10 s upon the arrival of S waves. To determine the direction of fault rupture, we implement a forward-modeling method, which takes smaller earthquake recordings as empirical Green’s functions to simulate the rupture direction of the beginning motion generated by larger events. With a small event nearby, we resolve the rupture characteristic of the 2014 Mw 4.4 event using information at stations within 35 km from the epicenters and successfully predict the ground-motion response at stations at farther distances, where directivity effect is significant. Rupture direction of simulated earthquakes with larger magnitudes can also be accurately resolved using the method proposed, opening a possibility to predict ground motions ahead of time, in particular for hazardous regions. Rapid Estimate of Ground Shaking Intensity by Combining Simple Earthquake Characteristics with Tweets
Here we demonstrate a model that combines Tweets following significant earthquakes with basic site and earthquake characteristics to produce a rapid estimate of the ground shaking intensity. We used all geo-tagged Tweets around the world containing the keyword “earthquake” or “tsunami” in several languages that occurred in the first 10 minutes following Japanese earthquakes of magnitude 6 or gr...

Owners of building portfolios in earthquake country have several data-related seismic risk mitigation concerns: Before an earthquake, they need to know the locations and seismic characteristics of their buildings to know which might pose a potential seismic risk. They also need the ability to assess and prioritize riskmitigation efforts, and to develop emergency response plans. Immediately afte...
متن کاملSource inversion of W phase: speeding up seismic tsunami warning
S U M M A R Y W phase is a long period phase arriving before S wave. It can be interpreted as superposition of the fundamental, first, second and third overtones of spheroidal modes or Rayleigh waves and has a group velocity from 4.5 to 9 km s−1 over a period range of 100–1000 s. The amplitude of long period waves better represents the tsunami potential of an earthquake. Because of the fast gro...

A rapid, holistic view of earthquake disasters begins with earthquake location and magnitude, alerted by seismic networks. The initial source characteristics, along with any available ground-shaking observations, can be used to rapidly estimate the shaking extent, its severity (e.g., ShakeMap), and its likely impact to society, for example, employing the U.S. Geological Survey's Prompt Assessme...
